Thread sizes explained.
V69, V92, V138, V207. Most US industrial shops talk about thread weight in this V-numbered system, but it isn't always obvious which size fits which work — or which machine can handle the bigger sizes without re-tooling.
The V prefix is shorthand for the standard US industrial bonded polyester / bonded nylon sizing system — sometimes shown as # or Size instead. V69 and #69 are the same thing.
Higher number means heavier thread. The number roughly tracks the thread's denier — V69 is about 600 denier, V92 is about 900, V138 is about 1300, V207 is about 2000. In practical terms:
- V46 — extremely light. Lingerie, lining fabrics. Rare in industrial shops.
- V69 — light apparel. T-shirts, blouses, dress shirts, lightweight cotton.
- V92 — medium. Workwear, denim seams, lightweight upholstery, light marine canvas.
- V138 — heavy. Leather goods, heavy upholstery, marine canvas, technical outdoor.
- V207 — extra-heavy. Saddle, harness, industrial covers, heavy webbing.
- V277, V346, V415 — saddle-grade and beyond. Specialty work.
The European Tex system runs on the same concept (denier-derived) but with different absolute numbers. Tex 70 is roughly equivalent to V69; Tex 90 to V92; Tex 135 to V138. Most spec sheets list both. American shops talk in V; European spec sheets in Tex.
At a glance
| Thread size | Approx. denier | Typical use | Needle (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| V69 | ~600 | Light apparel — t-shirts, blouses, dress shirts, lightweight cotton | #14 |
| V92 | ~900 | Medium — workwear, denim seams, lightweight upholstery, light marine canvas | #16 |
| V138 | ~1300 | Heavy — leather goods, heavy upholstery, marine canvas, technical outdoor | #19 |
| V207 | ~2000 | Extra-heavy — saddle, harness, industrial covers, heavy webbing | #22 |
Thread size determines two other choices: the needle and the hook capacity.
Needle: the eye of the needle has to clear the thread without binding. Bigger thread → bigger needle. Rough pairings (US needle sizes):
- V69 → #14 needle
- V92 → #16 needle
- V138 → #19 needle
- V207 → #22 needle
- V277 → #24 needle
Wrong needle for the thread = friction, heat, broken thread, or the eye of the needle wearing the thread coating off until it shreds. Pair them correctly.
Hook capacity: the rotary hook in the bobbin has to clear the thread on every rotation. Standard hooks are tuned for V92 and lighter. Heavy thread (V138 and above) needs a large hook — sometimes called a big hook or jumbo hook. A standard hook running V138 will clog within minutes; the big hook handles it without resistance.
The Speedway SW-1510L family ships with the standard horizontal large hook for V92 production. The SW-1510N/VS/DD adds a hook specifically rated for nine strands of bonded nylon — useful when you're running V138 or V207 on multi-layer leather welts. The SW-335L adds a large bobbin (twice the run length of standard) for production volumes on heavy thread, and we stock the OEM big hook as a separate replacement part.
Apparel
V69 for shirts, blouses, lightweight cotton. V92 for denim construction seams, workwear, heavier cotton. The SW 8000 A runs V69 to V92 comfortably.
Upholstery
V92 for lightweight upholstery (cotton, linen). V138 for furniture, automotive, marine — anywhere the seam needs visibility and structural strength. The SW-1510L family is designed around V138 for heavy upholstery work.
Leather goods
V138 is the workhorse. Bag construction, wallet edges, belt rolling — V138 has visible weight on the face but isn't heavy enough to look chunky. The SW-820 post-bed double needle and SW-335L cylinder bed both run V138 production all day.
Saddle, harness, heavy industrial
V207 minimum, often V277 for saddle skirt construction. At this thread weight you need both the large hook AND the heavy needle system, plus a machine designed for the torque. Specialty territory.

Common questions
- What do V69, V92, V138, and V207 mean?
- V is the standard US industrial bonded-polyester/bonded-nylon sizing system — V69, V92, V138, and V207, with a higher number meaning heavier thread. V69 is light apparel thread (shirts, blouses, lightweight cotton), V92 is medium (workwear, denim seams, lightweight upholstery), V138 is heavy (leather goods, heavy upholstery, marine canvas), and V207 is extra-heavy (saddle, harness, industrial covers, heavy webbing).
- Which thread weight should I use for which job?
- Match the weight to the work: V69 for light apparel like shirts and blouses, V92 for denim and workwear seams and lightweight upholstery, V138 for furniture, automotive, and marine upholstery as well as bag, wallet, and belt leather work, and V207 (often V277) for saddle, harness, and heavy industrial work.
- How does thread size affect the needle and hook?
- Thread size determines both the needle and the hook capacity. Bigger thread needs a bigger needle so the eye clears it without binding — roughly V69 to a #14 needle, V92 to #16, V138 to #19, and V207 to #22. For the hook, standard hooks are tuned for V92 and lighter; V138 and above need a large hook, since a standard hook running V138 will clog within minutes.
